Product Design & Development Contribution
Bringing cloud technology into everyday living.
As connected technology became increasingly integrated into the home, Tsinghua Tongfang explored how cloud storage and digital media could become part of everyday family life.
The objective was to develop an intelligent home media center that could bring digital content, connectivity and cloud-based functionality together within a dedicated physical product.
XCL contributed to the broader product design and development effort, helping explore how sophisticated technology could be translated into a product that felt simpler, more approachable and more naturally suited to the home.
The challenge wasn't simply adding more functionality. It was finding the right balance between powerful technology, simple interaction and a physical design appropriate for domestic spaces.
Powerful technology without technological complexity.
Smart-home products occupy a unique position. They need to perform like technology while existing alongside furniture, appliances and everyday objects.
Several priorities shaped the development:
- Technology Integration — Bringing cloud-storage and smart-home functionality together within one physical product.
- Simple User Experience — Making powerful functionality easier for everyday users to understand and operate.
- Home Integration — Creating a product that felt appropriate within residential environments rather than looking like conventional networking or computing equipment.
- Product Identity — Giving the device enough visual character to be recognizable without making it unnecessarily dominant within the home.
- Everyday Relevance — Turning the underlying technology into functionality that made sense within normal family life.
The original development specifically sought to balance extensive functionality with a minimalist user experience.
Designing technology around the environment where it lives.
As part of the wider product-development effort, XCL contributed to translating the technical concept into a more integrated home product.
Product strategy
The development began by considering the role the product would play within the connected home.
Rather than approaching it simply as another piece of computing hardware, the product was considered as part of a broader home environment where technology needed to provide useful functionality without creating unnecessary complexity.
Industrial design
The physical design focused on giving the product a stronger identity while allowing it to integrate naturally with its surroundings.
Form, proportions, surfaces and detailing were considered alongside the technical requirements to create a more cohesive consumer product.
Function & environmental integration
One of the central design questions was how a technologically capable device should exist physically within the home.
The development therefore considered the relationship between function, appearance and environment, helping the product feel less like standalone technical equipment and more like part of the connected living space.
User experience
Powerful functionality is only useful when people can understand how to access it.
The product experience was therefore developed around reducing unnecessary complexity and creating a more straightforward relationship between the user and the underlying smart-home technology.
Product refinement
The development process also focused on strengthening the overall product character and perceived quality.
Visual recognition, environmental integration and simpler operation were refined together rather than being treated as separate design problems.
Making intelligent technology part of everyday life.
The resulting smart home media center brought together cloud-terminal technology, digital media functionality and physical product design within a solution intended for everyday residential use.
The project demonstrated that creating better smart-home products isn't only about adding more technology. It is also about determining how that technology should behave, how people interact with it and how the physical product belongs within their environment.
For XCL, the project represents an important principle:
- The best connected products make sophisticated technology feel simpler, more useful and more natural in everyday life.
