Product Design & Development Contribution
Bringing advanced AR technology closer to everyday wear.
The HiAR G100 was developed around an ambitious challenge: bringing powerful augmented-reality technology into a form that felt lighter, more comfortable, and more practical to wear.
XCL contributed to the product design and development effort, working as part of the broader team behind the product to help translate technical requirements into a more refined and wearable physical solution.
The development challenge went beyond simply packaging advanced technology into a headset. The product needed to balance computing performance, optics, structural requirements, ergonomics, component integration, and industrial design within a compact wearable form.
High-performance technology. Less complexity for the user.
AR hardware traditionally presented several physical design challenges: weight, bulk, comfort, component packaging, visual complexity, and adjustability.
For the HiAR G100, the development objectives centred around creating a product that could deliver advanced AR functionality while providing a more comfortable and consumer-friendly wearing experience.
Key considerations included:
- Lightweight Wearability — Reducing the physical and visual burden associated with traditional AR equipment.
- Ergonomics — Creating a system capable of adapting more comfortably to different users.
- Component Integration — Bringing the electronics, optical system, camera, structural components, and power requirements together within a cohesive product.
- Structural Performance — Creating a physical architecture capable of supporting everyday adjustment and use.
- Design & Finish — Giving the technology a more integrated and refined appearance rather than allowing individual technical components to dominate the design.
Design built around technology and the person wearing it.
As part of the wider product-development effort, XCL contributed design thinking and development work focused on bringing together the physical, functional, and user-facing requirements of the AR system.
Rather than treating the technology and enclosure as separate challenges, the product was approached as one integrated wearable system.
Industrial design
The design direction focused on creating a softer and more integrated visual language for what was inherently a highly technical product.
Flowing frame geometry helped reduce the visual heaviness normally associated with AR hardware, while careful consideration of materials, finishes, and component integration contributed to a more refined overall appearance.
Ergonomics & wearability
Comfort was a central part of the development challenge.
The physical architecture incorporated an adjustable headband and elastic clamping system designed to accommodate different users and wearing conditions while helping distribute the product more effectively around the head.
Mechanical development
The mechanical structure had to accommodate the technology while maintaining strength, adjustability, and a clean exterior.
The product incorporated a reinforced U-shaped frame, folding arm mechanism, adjustable headband, and integrated structural elements to help balance durability with wearability.
Optical integration
The optical system was developed with user adjustment in mind, including adjustable pupil distance and optical tuning to accommodate different users.
Prototyping & validation
Multiple rounds of prototyping and testing were used throughout development to refine physical details, evaluate performance, and address manufacturing risks before production.
Testing included structural and functional considerations such as the folding mechanisms and camera performance.
Powerful hardware inside a wearable product.
The HiAR G100 incorporated:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 platform
- 4GB dual-channel memory
- 13MP HD camera system
- PDAF autofocus
- Adjustable optical system
Integrating these technologies while maintaining the intended wearable form was a central engineering and industrial-design challenge.
From complex technology to a recognized AR product.
The completed HiAR G100 brought together industrial design, mechanical architecture, optics, electronics, and ergonomics within a single wearable AR platform.
The product went on to receive both Red Dot and iF Design recognition, and the platform was applied across a range of commercial and professional use cases.
For XCL, the project represents the kind of challenge we value most: bringing design and engineering together to make complex technology more usable, manufacturable, and human.
